Sindelfingen - Dronfield's Twin TownSince 1971 Dronfield has been twinned with Sindelfingen, situated in the state of Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany; a formal partnership document was signed by the mayors of the two towns on 2nd October, 1981. Sindelfingen is situated in South West Germany, 10 miles west of Stuttgart and has a population of around 65,000. The town is a significant commercial and trade centre, thanks to the motor industry (Daimler-Benz), computers (IBM) and textiles. These industries are complemented by many small and medium scale companies operating in various branches of industry. The town is one of old and new. In the Old Town there is a wealth of half-timbered houses (restored in recent years), a fine old town hall and the old church of St. Martin which is over 900 years old. The modern town has an impressive range of sporting and cultural facilities including, the refurbished Stadthalle (Civic Hall), the Glaspalast (Glass Palace) swimming complex and the Floschen Stadium (which amongst other things has hosted Davis Cup Tennis and European indoor athletics). During the period of twinning there have been many civic, cultural, sporting, youth and professional exchanges between the two towns. Strong links have been forged between the Dronfield Band and their "twin", the Stadtkapelle Sindelfingen, resulting in a number of exchanges over the years. During the last exchange, in June 2004, Dronfield Band visited Sindelfingen and amongst other events played in the town's annual Strassenfest. We look forward to the Stadtkapelle's return visit to Dronfield in the near future. |
